Festivities in Isla Cristina, Huelva, Andalusia, Costa de la Luz


Festivities in Isla Cristina as in Costa de la Luz and the rest of Andalucia are lived out intensely. Whether they be local, regional or national the are all important. Probably the most well known is Carnival. Carnival and the patron saint celebration are the most important in Isla Cristina. It is a great event to enjoy if it coincides with your holidays.

One of the most popular events in Isla Cristina is Carnival. It is celebrated each year in the end of February or begining of March, and has a great importance to the people who live there. The ambiance is very festive and you can enjoy listening to all groups singing in a joking manner about events that have occured during the year in Spain.

The second festivity of great importance is obviously Easter week, as in the rest of Andalusia it is celebrated with great passion. After Semana Santa (easter week) comes the Theater Festival, Flamenco Festival and the famous Film Festival of Islantilla.

In the month of October they celebrate the patron saint and honor Our Lady of Rosario and Our Lady of the Sea in Punta del Caiman. Saint Francis is also widely celebrated.

Before October rolls around, more specifically on the 16th of July the Festivity in honor of our Virgen del Carmen, patron saint of the fisherman and very important in the fishing tradition. The main festivities in this locality are celebrated then in honor of Carmen. On the 23rd of June Saint John is also lots of fun. Everybody gathers around bonfires at the beach.

On the other hand just as in the rest of Andalusian territory the 28th of February they celebrate the day of Andalusia. Other nationa and international festivities are those of 1st of May being labor day, 12th of October is the Columbus day, also known as the discovery of America, but is also the day of the Virgen del Pilar. The 1st of November is All Saints day, and this is a day in which everybody goes the cementaries and church to pray for their loved ones that have passed away. There is also a holiday on the 6th and 8th of December. It is the day of the Spanish Constitution and the Day of the Virgin of Immaculate Conception.

25th of December is obviously Christmas day, 1st of Jan is New Years, and the 6th of January is Epiphany, or as they like to call it in Spain, "3 kings day".
